LIVNOT
EMERGENCY CAMPAIGN
NORTHERN ISRAEL IS IN
CRISIS - LIVNOT IS THERE Since the outbreak of war in the north of Israel,
much of the population remaining in the city of Tzfat has been confined to bomb
shelters, besieged by over 300 rockets over the past weeks. Many of the city's
bomb shelters were not kept in a state of preparedness for the sudden crisis,
and were not ready for the needs of the population. After 90% of the city employees
and welfare workers left the city, and the elderly caretakers fled, many elderly
and needy residents of Tzfat were left helpless with no one to turn to.
LIVNOT
- BUILDING THROUGH ISRAEL'S CHALLENGES Livnot U'Lehibanot, based in Tzfat,
has been providing award-winning educational and volunteering programs for young
Jewish adults since 1980. The Livnot community service project, implemented by
its program participants and staff, has been an important source of support for
the city's residents for the past 25 years. Whether it was the Lebanon war in
1982, Operation Moses 1985, the first Intifada, Operation Solomon in 1991, the
Russian Aliyah, the second Intifada, and now the 2006 Lebanon war, Livnot rose
to the challenges of the time and took the opportunity to fulfill its goal of
"building and rebuilding", once again.
LIVNOT
IN ACTION Because of its long record of service to the community, a special
joint committee of the Tzfat municipality and the IDF Home Front Command has appointed
Livnot to making the bomb shelters habitable, as well as all matters connected
with assistance to the elderly. In addition, the Livnot campus is housing army
officers who play an essential role in coordinating relief efforts. Since the
current crisis began, Livnot has: - Made usable 18
bomb shelters that were unfit, cleaning the fetid shelters, connecting electricity
and plumbing. Livnot even painted the shelters.
- Led the social welfare
efforts for the elderly whose caretakers have abandoned them.
- Provided
attention and companionship to children confined to bomb shelters, and to wounded
soldiers confined to their hospital bed.
- Delivered food to people who
are home-bound.
- Served as a clearinghouse for new volunteers arriving
in Tzfat.
